Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs) have been around for decades in Australia and all over the world. They are the rosella flocks of the arts industry; small, swift, colourful and noisy. Successful ARIs have launched careers, changed the culture of communities, sparked new forms of artistic expression and triggered economic development.

On 11 October 2016, Why Flock? brought interstate ARIs together to share their experiences, successes and lessons with local artists.

Representatives from local and interstate ARIs contributed their knowledge and ideas about setting up and running a space or program, trouble-shooting governance and compliance issues, professional development initiatives, the role of ARIs in supporting risk-taking and experimental practice, and more.
