Applications now open for the 2016 MPavilion / Art Monthly / Australasia Writing Award

Now in it's second year, applications are now open for the 2016 MPavilion / Art Monthly Australasia Writing Award is inviting applications.

Celebrating the value of design within the visual arts, MPavilion’s unique annual architecture commission and design event for Melbourne continues its partnership with leading Australian art magazine Art Monthly Australasia, to commission new critical writing that explores the flourishing field of interdisciplinary practice within art and design. This award is administered by the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA).

The award encourages Australian writers to contribute to the ongoing international art and design conversation. Writers are invited to submit a 200-word proposal for a 2,000-word essay exploring one or more aspects of the flourishing field of interdisciplinary practice within art and design today.

The winning writer receives $3,000 to write the essay for publication in the November 2016 issue of Art Monthly Australasia and will also have the opportunity to present this in the official 2016/17 season of MPavilion’s MTtalks program in Melbourne.

MPavilion’s founder Naomi Milgrom AO, chair of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, said she was excited about the award: “The MPavilion aims to bring the creative industry together by encouraging international design debate. In being responsive, a catalyst and container of ideas, - the MPavilion / Art Monthly Writing Award has created an opportunity for writers to bringing the discussion to new audiences.”

Art Monthly Australasia’s Editor Michael Fitzgerald reiterates the importance of such initiatives to foster the development of critical art writing in this country: “This is a rare and unique publishing platform for an Australian writer to test – and stretch – their talent, and to contribute in a substantial way to the contemporary discourse.”
