Art Business Basics helps you establish a business approach to your arts career as a visual or media artist, craft or design practitioner. Build your business confidence by efficiently managing the practical, everyday business requirements of your practice. Facilitated by Monica Davidson from Creative + Business, Art Business Basics offers business skills training tailored to the creative arts and provides expertise in helping artists develop sustainable businesses.

  • the development of short and long term art business plans, as the major project

About the course facilitator

Monica Davidson has a background in journalism, writing and filmmaking. For almost 20 years, Monica has run workshops on creativity and business, as well as consulting and coaching for individual practitioners and larger arts organisations. She is a regular guest lecturer on the subject of creative business at a number of institutions across Australia, including the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA), NAVA, Ausdance and the Australian Institute of Music. She is the author of the Australian version of Freelancing for Dummies.

In 2013 Monica was appointed as the first Creative Industries Business Advisor by the NSW Small Business Commissioner, recently extended to 2015. She works at both a policy level to improve understanding and representation of the creative industries in NSW, and provides individual business guidance and coaching to creative practitioners through NSW SmallBizConnect.

In October 2014 Monica was named one of the Westpac 100 Women of Influence in the Business Enterprise category. She has also recently completed her Masters in Screen Arts and Business at AFTRS. View here website here.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Participants are able to cancel their registration up to 7 days prior to the course start date by contacting NAVA. If cancellation occurs during the 7 days prior to the start date participants will be charged a 10% cancellation fee. There are no refunds for cancellation once the course has started.

For example

  • If you cancel participation 14 days prior to course starting – no cost
  • If you cancel participation 6 days prior to course starting – 10% fee
  • If you cancel after the course has started – no refund possible

There will be no refunds of course registration fees once the course has started. Participants are expected to notify NAVA if they no longer wish to continue the course after the course start date. If participants do not notify NAVA that they wish to cancel their participation, and simply do not complete set tasks and activities they will not receive a refund or an acknowledgement of course participation.
