Invasion Day/Survival Day Statement of Solidarity

The NAVA team will be joining and supporting nationwide events, protests and fundraisers for Invasion Day/Survival Day. We call on members of our community to stand with First Nations peoples on the right side of history by listening, showing up and paying the rent.

NAVA acknowledges the Gadigal, Wangal, Dharug, Dharawal, Kaurna, Ngunnawal, Ngambri and Dja Dja Wurrung peoples as the Traditional Custodians and knowledge-holders of the unceded lands on which we live, learn and work. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first artists and storytellers on this continent, and pay respect to First Nations communities' Ancestors and Elders. Sovereignty was never ceded.

January 26 2023 marks over 235 years of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ resilience and resistance against ongoing colonialism, dispossession, and systemic inequity. The NAVA team will be joining and supporting nationwide events, protests and fundraisers for Invasion Day/Survival Day. We call on members of our community to stand with First Nations peoples on the right side of history by listening, showing up and paying the rent.

NAVA is dedicated to supporting First Nations’ sovereignty and self-determination. We stand in solidarity with First Nations artists and arts workers every day in our commitment to improving labour conditions in the arts sector. NAVA values the significant contributions of First Nations artists and storytellers to our culture and is committed to centring First Nations cultural authority and leadership in the movement for a sustainable, equitable and ethical arts sector.

NAVA won’t be available for calls or enquiries during the day but please leave a message at 1800 046 282 or email us at nava@visualarts.net.au and we will respond the following day. While the NAVA team will be out of the office supporting local events, another way to show solidarity is substituting the January 26 public holiday for another day. This provision is allowable under some awards and agreements. Find out more by visiting Change it Ourselves.
