Gabriella Hirst

Gabriella Hirst is an artist who works between moving image and performance and is currently situated between Berlin and London.

Gabriella Hirst, born on Cammeraygal land (Australia) and currently situated between Berlin and London, is an artist who works between moving image and performance. 

Her work focuses on the garden and natural landscapes as a site of critique and care, capture and control- spanning plant taxonomies, landscape painting, art conservation and nuclear history. 

Gabriella was the recipient of the 2020 Ian Potter Moving Image Commission, and has previously been awarded the Marten Bequest Scholarship and the John Crampton Fellowship. She is an associate lecturer in Media Studies with the RCA School of Architecture.

Most recently, Gabriella’s works have been exhibited at Estuary Festival, Art Gallery of NSW, ACMI, and Palazzo Monti. 

In the near future, Gabriella will be developing her work Battlefield into a larger permanent installation and hopes to learn how to drive manual, finally.

In this video, Gabriella chats to NAVA about working through the ebb and flow of professional practice and her aspiration for art to be valued beyond measurable outputs.
