Noriko Nakamura is a Castlemaine-based (VIC) artist whose work explores ideas of animism, ritual practice, and relationships between humans and the material world. Employing traditional hand-carving techniques, Nakamura frequently works with limestone, transforming the material from heavy and unmoving to light, almost as if in motion. This kinetic quality marks Nakamura’s ongoing engagement with the transformative potential of materials in their work.
Amongst a number of solo and group exhibitions, Nakamura’s work has been presented previously at Caves, Gertrude Contemporary, Sutton Projects, West Space, and TCB Art inc.
Nakamura holds a Bachelor and Honours of Fine Arts from Victoria College of the Arts, and is enrolled in a Master of Visual Arts at La Trobe University in Bendigo.
In this video, Nakamura talks to NAVA about balancing her practice and motherhood, and how art as a personal response can affect others.
