Mylyn Nguyen

Mylyn Nguyen is a Sydney-based artist known for creating intricate paper miniature sculptures, often inspired by local buildings and childhood memories, to evoke curiosity and wonder.

Mylyn Nguyen is an artist based on the lands of the Gadigal and Wangal peoples in Sydney's inner west. Her practice involves making paper miniature sculptures, most recently of local buildings as an exploration of her childhood memories and curiosities. She often replicates real things, buildings and found objects in her everyday life. She has had several solo exhibitions and smaller projects that vary in appearance, approach and materials, but remain connected through intricate skill and imagination and the intention to generate spectacle and intrigue through her artwork.

Nguyen received a Master of Visual Arts in 2006 from Sydney College of the Arts, with her sculpture in the University exhibition, Utility, receiving a commendation. Since then, Nguyen has exhibited internationally with Brenda May Gallery/MAY SPACE at Art Stage Singapore.

In recent years, Nguyen completed a number of public commissions, including Murray Art Museum, Albury; Customs House, Sydney for Something Else is Alive, presented by the City of Sydney and The Curators’ Department; and Installation Contemporary in 2015, a curated component of Sydney Contemporary. In 2023, Nguyen was a finalist in the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize and the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award. She is represented by M Contemporary.

In this video, Nguyen discusses balancing the business and creative sides of her art practice, enjoying both the spontaneity of making art and the structure of tasks like accounting, and craft as an art form that connects with people.
