Early leadership gift sets momentum for NAVA’s AusArt Day campaign

Major $100,000 donation kicks off NAVA’s First Nations leadership campaign ahead of AusArt Day.

The National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) has received a major $100,000 gift from a private donor to launch its AusArt Day campaign, building momentum toward its goal of establishing the new Deputy Director of First Nations Policy and Advocacy.

The gift marks a significant early investment in implementing NAVA’s First Nations Policy, which aims to strengthen cultural safety, leadership, and equity across NAVA’s work as the national peak body for the visual arts, craft and design.

Penelope Benton, Executive Director of NAVA, said “This extraordinary early gift demonstrates confidence in the importance of this work. It sends a clear message that the sector is ready to invest in long-term cultural change and in leadership that reflects and serves First Nations artists and communities.”

Rebecca Ray, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Director on NAVA’s Board, said “NAVA’s First Nations Policy provides the framework for real, systemic change. This donation is a powerful show of trust, it will help us take the next step in ensuring that cultural safety, self-determination and accountability are embedded across NAVA’s work.”

The Deputy Director of First Nations Policy and Advocacy will lead the implementation of the Policy, working across NAVA’s advocacy, programs, and governance to embed First Nations voices and knowledge in decision-making.

AusArt Day, on Thursday 23 October, is Australia’s national day of giving to the arts.

Donations to NAVA’s campaign are tax-deductible and directly support the implementation of the First Nations Policy.
