Make good practice standard practice

Turn the Code into everyday practice with NAVA’s online training course.

The visual arts, craft and design sector runs on relationships between artists and galleries, organisations and independent workers, institutions and communities. When those relationships are clear, respectful and transparent, everyone benefits. When expectations are unclear, things can unravel quickly.

NAVA's Code of Practice Training Course is designed to strengthen work relationships by turning the Code from a reference document into something practical you can actively apply.

The online interactive courses offer artists, arts workers and organisations a hands-on way to engage with the Code of Practice for Visual Arts, Craft and Design (the Code), the sector's benchmark for ethical and professional standards, endorsed by the Australian Government under the National Cultural Policy, Revive.

Applying the Code

The Code has long been a cornerstone of good practice across the sector. But knowing it exists is not the same as knowing how to use it.

Participants work through interactive learning modules featuring short instructional videos, practical exercises and real-world case studies. The aim is to help you understand how the Code applies to everyday decisions, agreements and working relationships.

Each course takes between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on how deeply you engage with the exercises. Participants retain access to all learning materials and the community board for a full year.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to navigate the Code with confidence, recognise where it applies in your own work, use it as a practical tool in negotiations and decision-making, and strengthen trust and accountability in your professional relationships.

Four courses, tailored to your role

NAVA has developed four distinct courses, recognising that the Code applies differently depending on where you sit in the sector:

This makes the training especially useful for induction programs for new staff, Board orientation, professional development, governance and policy reviews and organisations wanting to demonstrate alignment with sector standards.

The course was originally developed to be embedded into induction and training packages across the sector, helping to strengthen good practice.

Pricing

Each course is $139 per person. NAVA Members receive a 30% discount, and NAVA Organisation Members purchasing courses for their employees can access tiered bulk discounts: 35% for 10-19 employees, 40% for 20-29, and 45% for 30 or more. For bulk purchases, reach out directly to nava@visualarts.net.au.

Upholding ethical standards is what makes the visual arts, craft and design sector genuinely equitable and inclusive. Whether you're an emerging artist navigating your first agreements or a major institution reviewing how you work with independent practitioners, these courses meet you where you are.

The Code exists to improve conditions of work and practice across the visual arts, craft and design sector. The courses make it easier to put those principles into action.
