Exhibition: Veil, Aldona Kmieć

Veil: solo exhibition of new works by Polish-Australian photographer, Aldona Kmieć.

31 July - 18 August 2024
Opening Night: Wed 31 July, 6.30-8pm
Meet the Artist: Sat 3 August, 2-4pm

Aldona Kmieć's art practice reflects her cross-cultural experience as an outsider and explores migrant narratives and sense of displacement.

Her recent work focuses on long-exposure photographs of the artist, dancing. Producing this series involved labour-intensive repetition of the body movement and wearing layers of colourful compositions. This kind of repetitive and physical effort required to create a photograph is a form of contemplation in itself, helping to increase the awareness of her body and mind. The colours Kmieć chooses are connected to her emotions, the red and white Polish flag and historical Polish cultural motifs such as the monument to the Heroes of Warsaw. Also known as the Warsaw Nike, in Greek mythology she is a goddess who personified victory.
