Exhibition: Expanded Textiles
Expanded Textiles reflects the growing intersection of sustainability, environmental awareness and contemporary textile and biotextile art.
Bold experimentation unites each artists’ work. Working across weaving, stitching, knotting, biotextiles and experimental fibre processes, the artists challenge traditional definitions of textile practice. While some foreground natural processes and biological investigation, others employ technological processes and innovative fabrication methods. Many make connections between nature and environmental concerns, personal history and identity, creating works that are both visually compelling and intellectually engaging.
Together, these artists reveal the remarkable versatility of textiles as a contemporary artistic medium, one that honours traditional techniques while continually evolving through new ideas, materials and processes.
Expanded Textiles invites audiences to experience the breadth and potential of fibre-based art and discover the many ways artists transform familiar materials into compelling contemporary works.
To coincide with the exhibition opening weekend, artist Julie Paterson will lead a free ‘Stitch-in’ workshop in the gallery inviting visitors to participate in her ongoing Menindee Memorial Loop project. Bookings are essential as spaces are limited. The workshop will be followed by the first in a series of artist talks featuring exhibiting artists on Sunday 6 September.
