Why insurance is essential

Insurance is an essential part of sustaining professional practice, providing protection for artists and arts workers against a range of risks. Visual artists, craft practitioners and designers are often required to have their own insurance to participate in a wide range of activities, such as exhibiting, undertaking a residency, creating works in public spaces, presenting workshops, renting a studio, participating in an open studio trail, and presenting or selling work at market stalls.

Similarly, arts workers (curators, installers, registrars, conservators, arts administrators etc.) will find that public and professional indemnity is compulsory when engaged as independent contractors.

A collaborative effort for the sector

In recent years, changes in the insurance industry have created uncertainty and rising costs across all sectors, including the creative industries. Today's announcement is the result of Craft Victoria, Guildhouse, and NAVA working collaboratively to negotiate this partnership with Cover for Creatives on behalf of our Members.

Affordable and accessible insurance is vital for artists, arts workers, and the sustainability of our sector. This outcome demonstrates the power of sector-wide collaboration in building a future where artists’ careers and practices are sustained and nourished.

For enquiries, email nava@visualarts.net.au or call 1800 046 282 from 9-10am and 2-4pm AEDT from Monday-Thursday.

Thank you for being a valued Member of NAVA. We look forward to supporting you with this enhanced insurance partnership.

Best regards,

The NAVA Team
